open your eyes

the future is another

that feeling of acceleration and inminent catastrophe is gone

we did it; we solved the planetary crisis

…what is it like?

  • We invite you to transport yourself to another possible future of Good Living where there is no longer a planetary crisis. What is it like?

Answer these questions speaking in the first person from that other future. Exercise your imagination with your family, your friends, or your community. Create a collective story. Ask more questions.

Imagination is the first territory where we sow reality. Let's reforest it together.

  • Collective history of the future

    1. Form a circle of time travelers.

    2. One person scrolls until the person in front of them tells them to stop. Click and reveal the random card and answer the question aloud, in one or two sentences. Answer from a desirable future where there is no climate crisis, in the first person. (E.g.: In this future, we consider the plants around us to be members of the community and involve them in decisions).

    3. If someone in the circle resonates with your imagination, they can make a gesture (see suggested gestures) of resonance (1) or a thread gesture (2) to add to your answer. If someone disagrees with your imagination, they can make a knot gesture (3) to explain their disagreement and propose an alternative.

    4. If you read the question and someone else wants to answer it, they can make a bowl gesture (4) to ask you for it. If you want to pass the question on to someone else, you can pass it on with a bowl gesture (4).

    5. If you are playing on your cell phone or computer, refresh the page to turn all the cards over again.

  • Their function is to communicate without interrupting each other and to weave our responses into a collective story of the future. Feel free to change or add your own gestures.

    1. Resonance (I agree with your imagination! I dream about that too.) Shake both open hands on either side of your face as if applauding silently.

    2. Thread (I want to pick up on your answer and add something new to the story. Pass me the word!) Swirl your ring fingers in front of you.

    3. Knot (Something in your answer stopped my imagination. I'll tell you why and suggest an alternative). Raise a clenched fist to your forehead.

    4. Bowl (I don't have a clear answer to this question, I offer it to you because I'm interested in knowing what you imagine). Cup your hands together and offer or ask the question.

  • Great. We also love things you can touch with your hands and take far away from screens. You can download a free file to print and cut out here (it is in spanish though)

Or if you want a set of cards with their box, look for them directly at our events or by writing to gabriela@otrosfuturos.org.

This is a card game that invites us to re-imagine everything that needs to be re-imagined for a radically better world.

What are those other possible futures like?

The crisis of planetary systems calls on us to imagine a radically different way of living—but the current system has occupied our imagination with apocalypses or false solutions.

That cannot be humanity's only destiny. We want Others. We insist on Others. We know that Others exist. So collectively, we have to exercise Others.

And that exercise begins with our imagination.
